Quonset Hut Notes

Dimensions and such

Preliminary discussion have us building a hut of the following dimensions:

  • 18' rib (two ribs make an arc)
  • Arcs are 8' apart
  • 80' (ish) spine
  • 1.5" PVC acquired in 20' lengths
  • 2 40'x40' tarps will provide the covering ($144 ea)
  • Tarps have a grommet every 18" so we need 27 bungee balls per 40' edge
  • 100 6" bungee balls cost $25 (we should get 200)

Initially we'll buy enough pvc to build two arcs, a spine and a side support (or 1x6 for that) and test build that for sturdiness

Carl-approved.pngThe Carl Edwards Guarantee: There's 0% chance of the monkey hut hurting anyone.

Material List

  • RIBS 22 18' sections of sched 40 PVC 1.5" - BOUGHT
  • SPINE 4 20' sections of sched 40 PVC 1.5" - BOUGHT
  • SUPPORT 8 20' sections of sched 40 PV 1.5" = BOUGHT
  • 2 40'x40' heavy duty anti UV duty tarps - BOUGHT
  • 108 Bungee Balls (come amounts of 100) - BOUGHT
  • 160' of 1x6, 2x4, 2x6 or whatever wood we have (we have plenty)
  • 4 rolls 3M Highland Duct Tape
  • 3 spine connectors
  • 400' of decent rope (possibly)- BOUGHT
  • 36 construction spikes

COSTS

  • $494.00 for 2 40'x40' heavy duty anti UV duty tarps -(Online Price)
  • $255.00 for 34 20' sections of sched 40 PVC 1.5" -(Wade's approximate estimate)
  • $19.00 for 2 20' sections of sched 40 PVC 1.5" -(wade's approximate estimate)
  • $5.00 for 5 couplings for sched 40 PVC 1.5" -(Home Depot)
  • $40.00 for 4 rolls 3M Highland Duct Tape -(Sam's Club)
  • $50.00 for 200 Bungee Balls -(rv toy outlet)
  • $60 for 20 construction spikes -(based on Carl's hazy memory)

TOTAL ESTIMATE: $923

+++The above costs are for amounts to bring us up to the total needed, plus extras in case of breakage. Remember, we bought some for testing purposes already++

OTHER CRAP

  • SCHED 40 PVC PRICING (Lakwood Pipe & steel)
  • 1.5" is $1.20/ft
  • 2" is $1.50/ft
  • 3" is $3.45/ft
  • That works out to roughly...
  • $850 just for the PVC if we go with mainly 1.5" (we will also need 2" pvc at 2' to use as sleeves to connect the ribs)
  • They did say we could get a bulk discount, but how much I don't know yet.

Other notes

-Wind typically comes from SSW direction

-Monkey Hut should be built perpendicular to the prevailing winds

-The only way to get decent candy-caned rebar is with a torch, in my experience. I also use smaller gauge rebar for the candy-caned part.

-Additionally, so as to minimize dust and wind as much as possible, I fasten the tarp down to the ground at every single gromment -- just as the tarp needs to be fastened to the ribs at every grommet with whatever you are using.

-highly recommend using 3' metal stakes instead of rebar -- don't bend, easier to pound in and get out, etc...
